Programs & Initiatives

The goals of The Food Trust's programs and
initiatives are to

  • Increase access to affordable, nutritious food
  • Improve health through better nutrition
  • Support local farms and sustain
    the environment

Our school and community-based programs
and initiatives improve food access and support
community leaders working on food and nutrition
issues. The Food Trust develops educational and
marketing campaigns to increase demand for
nutritious foods and promote farmers' markets
and community-based nutrition education initiatives.
We promote public policies that support the
development of school nutrition policies, food markets,
and other food resources in underserved communities.

We have two types of programs and initiatives at
The Food Trust:

School Based Programs

School Market Program
This program is a hands-on learning curriculum that teaches students to improve their diets, develop employment and entrepreneurial skills, and educate themselves about issues that affect their health and the health of their communities.

Comprehensive School Nutrition Policy
A coordinated school nutrition policy provides the framework for ensuring that students attending schools in Philadelphia receive nutrition education messages that are reinforced throughout the school environment.

Kindergarten Initiative
This initiative targets low-income kindergarten students through the classroom, supplying a curriculum that integrates nutrition into their daily lessons and offering healthy snacks grown by local farmers.

School Food and Beverage Reform
A reform effort that works to improve the policy on vending machine snacks.

Community Based Programs

Farmers’ Market Program
Farmers' markets provide access to fresh produce and nutrition education to community residents while helping to support family farms.

Farmers’ Market Alliance The Farmers' Market Alliance increases political and economic support for Pennsylvania agricultural products and to leverage public policy changes to improve the viability of family farms.

Supermarket Campaign

Corner Store Campaign
