What's Your Why?

Our work is possible thanks to our dedicated and passionate staff and partners who care so deeply about our work to ensure delicious, nutritious food for all. We asked members of our community to share their “why” — the reason why they came to work for The Food Trust, or what motivates them to continue to fight every day against nutrition insecurity. As you read through these stories, we hope they’ll inspire you to think through your “why” as well. Will you join us as we stand up for our most vulnerable neighbors?

“I grew up nutritionally insecure. When I went to college, I could count the number of fruits I had tried on one hand. In grade school, I was embarrassed by the lack of produce in my diet as I saw my peers open their lunch boxes to a colorful array of options. I love getting to teach students about eating as an adventure, and a way to celebrate and support our bodies. Being able to give students a safe, exploratory space to try new fruits and vegetables they otherwise do not have access to heals the part of me that was in the same position as a young girl.”

“Food justice is the ultimate intersectional issue: Because everyone eats, food system work has amazing potential to not only improve social determinants of health, but to unite people across race, class and geographic lines.”

“I have friends who are single parents, trying their best to manage limited time and money. Traveling on a bus to a grocery store, allocating a small food budget and cooking can all be challenging. I love that The Food Trust brings nutritious, affordable food options to people who don’t live near a grocery store.”
