October 31, 2025: When SNAP Stops, We Step Up - A Message from The Food Trust

As of November 1, 2025, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) will be cut off, eliminating benefits for more than 42 million Americans. Overnight, families and individuals who rely on this essential safety net will be left wondering how they’ll afford their next meal.

While The Food Trust is not a food bank providing emergency food, our programs work to ensure that healthy food is accessible and affordable in every community, every day.

September 18, 2025: The Food Trust, Congressman Evans Highlight Impact of SNAP-Ed Cuts

Earlier this week, Congressman Dwight Evans, the School District of Philadelphia, and leaders of The Food Trust gathered with local parents and caregivers to address the recent defunding of the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program-Education (SNAP-Ed) and how it jeopardizes the health of Pennsylvania’s residents. After the press conference, a class of first-grade students at Andrew Hamilton Elementary School in West Philadelphia took part in a nutrition lesson, demonstrating the positive impact of SNAP-Ed programming.

August 19, 2025: The Food Trust Invests $800,000 in Grants to Support Retailers Across PA to Make Healthy Food More Available and Affordable

The Food Trust, in partnership with Pennsylvania-based Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFIs) and the PA Department of Community and Economic Development, recently awarded $800,000 in funding to 13 recipients of the 2024-2025 round of the Pennsylvania Fresh Food Financing Initiative (PA FFFI) grant program.

A week dedicated to spotlighting local farmers markets in community neighborhoods, the annual celebration brings attention to the importance of supporting fresh, local produce and its providers. As NFMW draws near, it is crucial to show support to local farmers and nutrition education programs that connect residents to these providers.

July 2, 2025: The Food Trust, Share Food Program, Philadelphia City Council President Johnson Highlight Impact of SNAP-Ed Programs

Philadelphia City Council President Kenyatta Johnson, alongside other elected officials and leaders of The Food Trust and Share Food Program, gathered with members of the community today to address the proposed defunding of the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program-Education (SNAP-Ed) and call on federal legislators to reject the current funding bill. Children attending summer camp at The Caring Center, a West Philadelphia childcare center that participates in SNAP-Ed programming, joined the speakers in sharing delicious, crunchy apples, and a lesson about apple trees, further demonstrating the impact of cutting nutrition education from the federal budget.

June 20, 2024: Introducing The Food Trust's 2024 Farmers Market Season

 Continuing a 30-plus-year tradition of infusing Philadelphia communities with fresh fruits and vegetables, The Food Trust is thrilled to launch its 2024 farmers market season with a slate of multi-vendor farmers markets (year-round) and smaller seasonal farm stands (July-October) located in neighborhoods across the city. In an effort to increase affordability of fresh produce, all Food Trust farmers markets accept SNAP/EBT, Food Bucks, WIC and Senior Checks and cash, and many vendors also accept debit/credit. In addition, The Food Trust’s talented nutrition educators will provide weekly live cooking demonstrations at all of our seasonal farm stands, where customers can receive nutrition tips, food samples and Food Bucks.

June 10, 2024: Request for Proposals - Cooking Matters Evaluation

The Food Trust is pleased to release a Request for Proposal (RFP), which seeks an evaluator to conduct an impact evaluation of Cooking Matters’ new curriculum, Cooking Matters Core. Cooking Matters Core is designed to help organizations and implementers reach individuals, caregivers and families with dynamic content about purchasing and preparing delicious, nutritious foods. The evaluation will test Cooking Matters Core’s impact on purchasing and preparing foods that meet nutrition, budget, and personal needs.

The Food Trust is pleased to announce the acquisition of Cooking Matters. This nationally recognized nutrition education program, developed by Share Our Strength in 1993, has reached nearly 1 million individuals through courses, tours and flexible lessons in communities across the country. The program includes interactive, evidence-based curricula and resources for children, families and adults; its customizable lessons and toolkits focus on shopping and cooking healthy meals on a limited budget within a variety of community-based settings.

Nov. 8, 2023: Introducing the Nutrition Navigator, a Free Multi-Language Mapping Resource

The culmination of a multi-year, multi-partner effort to help residents navigate their local food system, The Food Trust, the Bainum Family Foundation and the Montgomery County Food Council are pleased to announce the launch of the Nutrition Navigator (found at map.thefoodtrust.org). This interactive, multi-language, free online community resource map, currently focused on the Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. regions, gives residents a clear and comprehensive picture of the healthy food-related programs and resources available to them, from nutrition education and incentive programs, to local points of access and job training opportunities.
