The Food Trust's Story

Since 1992, The Food Trust has worked to help individuals and communities access, afford and learn about the foods that support our health and bring us joy.

Meet Philbert

If you’ve ever shopped at Philadelphia’s storied Reading Terminal Market, you’ve probably noticed Philbert — a 225-pound bronze pig that subsists on a steady diet of coins and bills. Created by artist Eric Berg, this (not-so-little!) piggy first came to the Market in 1995. In the years since, Philbert has supported The Food Trust’s programs that work to ensure delicious, nutritious food for all — from nutrition education for kids and adults, to healthy food access points like farmers markets and corner stores, to nutrition incentive programs like Food Bucks and Food Bucks Rx — as well as our growth into the nationally recognized nonprofit we are today.

Next time you visit Reading Terminal Market and enjoy its delicious offerings, say hello to Philbert and give him a snack! And, you can always support our programming any time by visiting thefoodtrust.org/donate. Together, we can make sure nutritious food is within reach for all our neighbors.

10 Years of Night Market Philadelphia

In 2010, The Food Trust created Night Market Philadelphia to bring communities together to celebrate the joy of food. Over the years, it became so much more: an opportunity for local entrepreneurs to grow their businesses, a catalyst for community engagement, a creator of jobs and economic growth.

On October 3, 2019, we hosted the 36th and final official Night Market. We held events in 25 diverse neighborhoods, working with 45 community partners, organizations and city agencies. We supported well over 600 local food entrepreneurs and hundreds of local artists, performers and arts organizations. During the program’s 10-year operation, we brought together nearly 700,000 attendees, with an average of 20,000 people per event.

To continue supporting the joy of bringing people together around food, The Food Trust is pleased to offer consulting services on food events including food truck festivals and pop-up farmers markets. Want to learn more? Visit our Technical Assistance page.
