I want to emphasize just how crucial SNAP-Ed funding is to the work we do at Historic Fairhill, located in North Philadelphia’s Fairhill neighborhood — an area deeply impacted by food insecurity and limited access to healthy food.
Thanks to the vital support from SNAP-Ed, administered through The Food Trust, we have been able to provide essential nutrition education programming that we could not sustain on our own. This funding is absolutely critical to our efforts. Specifically:
– The Food Trust leads the hands-on cooking demonstrations and nutrition classes for our middle school youth internship program. Without this support, we would not be able to offer these empowering educational opportunities that equip youth with the skills to make healthier food choices.
– We also partner with The Food Trust to run the Potter-Thomas School Garden Club, where SNAP-Ed funding enables nutrition education and gardening activities that instill healthy habits in students during the school year.
– The 4th & Lehigh Farmers Market, supported through SNAP-Ed, is a lifeline for many neighborhood residents who depend on it for affordable, fresh produce — without it, access to healthy food would be severely diminished.
The potential loss of SNAP-Ed funding would be devastating to our programs and the community we serve. It would strip away critical resources that are fundamental to promoting food security and health equity in Fairhill.
